Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction™
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based program that helps people manage stress and develop a more grounded, present relationship with their daily lives. Originally developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR has decades of research supporting its effectiveness for reducing anxiety, chronic stress, and the physical symptoms that come with them.
The core idea is simple but powerful: much of our suffering comes from being caught up in worry about the future or regret about the past. MBSR teaches you how to pay attention to what is happening right now, with curiosity and kindness rather than judgment.
How MBSR Works
MBSR uses a combination of practices to help you build awareness of your body, thoughts, and emotions in real time. These include:
- Breath awareness: Learning to notice and follow the rhythm of your breathing as a way to anchor yourself in the present moment.
- Body awareness: Paying attention to physical sensations, areas of tension, and what your body might be communicating about your stress level.
- Gentle movement: Slow, intentional stretching or rocking that helps you reconnect with your body without strain or pressure.
- Mindful observation: Noticing thoughts and feelings as they arise without attaching to them or pushing them away.
A key shift in MBSR is learning to respond to your experience with curiosity instead of criticism. For example, instead of “this is bad” or “I shouldn’t feel this way,” you learn to notice, “I feel stressed right now,” and offer yourself some gentleness. That small change in how you relate to your own experience can help stress soften rather than build.
Over time, this practice builds real capacity. You’re not just learning to relax in the moment. You’re training your nervous system to handle difficulty with more steadiness and less reactivity.
What to Expect
MBSR practices are accessible to everyone regardless of experience. You don’t need to be “good at” meditation or have any background in mindfulness. The work meets you where you are.
Sessions may involve guided meditation, gentle movement, and reflective conversation about what you’re noticing in your body and mind. Some practices will feel calming right away. Others may bring up uncomfortable feelings or restlessness, and that’s a normal part of the process. Your practitioner will help you navigate whatever comes up with patience and support.
MBSR is not therapy or counseling. At Refuge, this work is offered by our certified somatic practitioner as a standalone practice or as a complement to your existing therapy process. If you are currently working with a therapist, your practitioner is happy to collaborate with them to support your overall care.
What MBSR Can Help With
MBSR has been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of concerns, including:
- Chronic stress and overwhelm
- Anxiety and worry
- Difficulty sleeping or winding down
- Burnout and compassion fatigue
- Chronic pain or tension
- Racing thoughts or difficulty concentrating
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or your body
- Emotional reactivity or a short fuse
It is also valuable for people who aren’t in crisis but want to build a stronger foundation of self-awareness, calm, and resilience in their everyday lives.
