Interoception Skills Building

Interoception is the ability to notice what is happening inside your body. It is one of your senses, just like sight, hearing, or touch, but instead of taking in information from the outside world, it’s focused inward. Your body sends quiet signals all day long telling you things like when you’re hungry, tired, too warm, nervous, or calm. Interoception is how you pick up on those signals.

For some people, these signals come through loud and clear. For others, they’re faint, confusing, or hard to trust. Trauma, chronic stress, and neurodivergence can all affect how well someone reads their own internal cues. Interoception skills building helps you strengthen that connection so you can better understand what your body needs and respond to it with care.

How Interoception Skills Building Works

This practice involves guided exercises that help you tune in to your body’s internal signals in a structured, supported way. It’s not about analyzing or fixing what you feel. It’s about learning to notice.

During a session, you might:

  • Notice whether your heartbeat feels fast, slow, or steady
  • Pay attention to whether your belly feels tight, soft, full, or empty
  • Observe sensations like warmth, tingling, heaviness, or lightness
  • Check in with your energy level and notice whether you feel alert, sluggish, or somewhere in between
  • Practice naming what you notice without judging it as good or bad

These exercises are simple by design. The power is in the repetition and the safety of the space. Over time, what once felt vague or invisible starts to come into focus, and you develop a more reliable sense of what your body is telling you.

What to Expect

Sessions are slow paced and guided. There is no pressure to feel anything specific or get it “right.”

Some people find this work surprisingly emotional. When you start listening to a body you’ve been disconnected from, feelings can surface that you didn’t know were there. Others may feel very little at first, especially if they’ve spent years numbing out or powering through. Both responses are completely normal, and your practitioner will meet you wherever you are.

Interoception skills building is not therapy or counseling. At Refuge, this work is offered by our certified somatic practitioner as a standalone practice or as a complement to your existing therapy process. If you are currently working with a therapist, your practitioner is happy to collaborate with them to support your overall care.

What Interoception Skills Building Can Help With

Strengthening your interoceptive awareness can be beneficial if you experience:

  • Difficulty knowing what you’re feeling or what you need
  • Trouble recognizing hunger, fullness, fatigue, or pain until it’s extreme
  • Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from your body
  • Anxiety or overwhelm that seems to come out of nowhere
  • Difficulty setting boundaries because you’re unsure of your own limits
  • Sensory processing challenges or neurodivergent experiences like ADHD or autism
  • A pattern of ignoring your body’s signals and burning out as a result
  • Chronic stress, people pleasing, or over-functioning

It is also a foundational practice for anyone doing deeper somatic or trauma work. The better you can read your own internal signals, the more effectively you can engage with other body-based approaches.
