Guided Meditation

Guided meditation is a practitioner-led practice where someone walks you through the meditation experience using verbal cues, imagery, or body-based prompts. Unlike meditating on your own, you don’t have to figure out what to focus on or wonder if you’re doing it right. Your practitioner provides the structure so you can simply follow along and stay present.

For many people, this makes meditation far more accessible. If you’ve tried meditating on your own and found it frustrating, overwhelming, or hard to stick with, guided meditation removes the guesswork and gives your mind something to anchor to.

How Guided Meditation Works

During a guided meditation session, your practitioner will lead you through a practice using their voice. This might include directing your attention to your breath, inviting you to notice sensations in your body, walking you through a visualization, or guiding you through a body scan from head to toe.

Some sessions are quiet and still. Others may incorporate:

  • Gentle movement or stretching
  • Sound, music, or rhythmic cues
  • Breath patterns or pacing
  • Focused attention on a word, phrase, or intention

The style of meditation will depend on what you need. Some practices are designed to calm an activated nervous system. Others help build focus, process emotions, or simply create space for you to slow down and check in with yourself.

The goal isn’t to empty your mind or stop thinking. Thoughts will come, and that’s completely normal. Guided meditation is about gently returning your attention to the present moment each time it wanders, building that capacity over time.

What to Expect

Sessions are gentle and low pressure. You may sit, lie down, or stand depending on the practice. You stay fully clothed and in control the entire time.

Some people feel a deep sense of calm or clarity during meditation. Others may notice restlessness, emotions surfacing, or difficulty staying focused, especially in the beginning. None of that means you’re doing it wrong. It’s simply your mind and body adjusting to a different pace.

Guided meditation is not therapy or counseling. At Refuge, this work is offered by our certified somatic practitioner as a standalone practice or as a complement to your existing therapy process. If you are currently working with a therapist, your practitioner is happy to collaborate with them to support your overall care.

What Guided Meditation Can Help With

Guided meditation can be beneficial for people experiencing:

  • Chronic stress or an overactive mind
  • Anxiety, worry, or racing thoughts
  • Difficulty winding down or falling asleep
  • Burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Emotional reactivity or feeling easily overwhelmed
  • Disconnection from their body or inner experience
  • Difficulty focusing or staying present
  • A desire to build a meditation practice but unsure where to start

It is also a helpful complement to other somatic or therapeutic work, giving your nervous system regular practice at settling into a calmer, more regulated state.
