Body Trauma Liberation™
Body Trauma Liberation (BTL) is a guided, gentle dance movement practice designed to help the body feel safe again after hard or scary experiences. It works with a simple truth: when something stressful or frightening happens, the body remembers it even after the event is over. You may stay tight, jumpy, or exhausted, like your body is still trying to protect you from something that’s already passed.
BTL helps people listen to their bodies and gently release that stuck stress. The focus is on what the body feels and how it wants to move, not just what the mind thinks.
How BTL Works
BTL uses three simple, guided dance movements as a foundation for releasing stored tension and trauma. These movements are intentionally uncomplicated. The simplicity is part of what makes the practice accessible and effective. You don’t need any dance experience or physical ability beyond basic movement.
During a session, you may:
- Notice sensation: Bring awareness to where your body feels tight, heavy, numb, or relaxed.
- Move gently: Follow three guided dance movements at your own pace, allowing your body to lead rather than your mind.
- Breathe deeply: Use breath to support the release process and stay connected to what’s happening in your body.
- Express emotion: Sadness, anger, grief, or other challenging feelings may come up. BTL creates space for those emotions to be expressed through movement rather than staying locked inside.
- Build trust: Over time, you learn to listen to and trust your body’s signals again, something that trauma often disrupts.
There is no forcing or pushing. Everything happens at a caring, guided pace. If your body wants to move beyond the three foundational movements into its own preferred expression, that is welcomed and supported.
What to Expect
BTL sessions are gentle and guided. You remain fully clothed and in control of how much or how little you move.
Some people feel a deep sense of release or calm during or after a session. Others may notice that emotions surface unexpectedly. Both responses are normal and part of how the body processes what it’s been carrying. Your practitioner will be there to support you through whatever comes up.
BTL is not therapy or counseling. At Refuge, this work is offered by our certified somatic practitioner as a standalone practice or as a complement to your existing therapy process. If you are currently working with a therapist, your practitioner is happy to collaborate with them to make sure your care is cohesive and supportive.
What BTL Can Help With
BTL can be beneficial for people experiencing:
- Stored tension or tightness that doesn’t seem to release on its own
- A feeling of being “frozen” or shut down in their body
- Difficulty feeling safe or relaxed, even in safe environments
- Lingering effects of trauma, abuse, or overwhelming life experiences
- Disconnection from their body or physical sensations
- Emotional numbness or difficulty expressing feelings
- Chronic stress, fatigue, or burnout
- A desire to rebuild trust with their own body
It is also a meaningful practice for people who feel drawn to movement but find traditional exercise or fitness too activating or disconnected from their emotional experience.

BTL might be a good fit if:
