Biodynamic Breathwork Trauma Release System®
Biodynamic Breathwork Trauma Release System (BBTRS) is a body-based healing practice that helps people feel safer and more at ease in their bodies. It works with the understanding that when scary or stressful things happen, our bodies hold onto that stress, like a tight knot that never fully relaxes. Even after the event is over, the body may still act like it’s in danger because it hasn’t had the chance to fully release what it’s carrying.
Talk and awareness alone aren’t always enough to reach that kind of stored tension. Sometimes very specific, body-level attention is needed to help the stress move and let go. That’s where BBTRS comes in.
How BBTRS Works
BBTRS uses six core elements to help the body release stored stress and trauma:
- Breath: A connected breathing technique helps activate the body’s natural release process and bring awareness to areas of tension or holding.
- Movement: Gentle, intuitive movement or light shaking helps the body discharge stored energy that’s been locked in the muscles and tissues.
- Touch: You may place your own hands on areas of your body where you notice tension, helping to bring attention and care to those places.
- Sound: Making sounds like sighing, humming, or vocal expression supports the release process and helps move energy that might otherwise stay stuck.
- Emotion: Feelings like sadness, anger, or grief may surface during a session. This is a normal and healthy part of the process. The goal is to let emotions arise and move through the body rather than staying trapped inside.
- Meditation: Stillness and rest allow the nervous system to integrate what’s been released, helping the body settle into a calmer, more regulated state.
These elements work together to help the body remember how to let go. Not every session will use all six in the same way. Your practitioner will guide the process based on what your body needs in the moment.
What to Expect
A session may involve periods of active connected breathing, gentle movement, emotional expression, and quiet rest. You remain fully clothed and in control throughout.
Some people feel a sense of lightness or deep relaxation afterward. Others may notice that emotions or physical sensations come up during or after a session that feel unfamiliar or intense. This is part of how the body processes what it’s been holding, and your practitioner is there to support you through it.
BBTRS is not therapy or counseling. At Refuge, this work is offered by our certified somatic practitioner as a standalone practice or as a complement to your existing therapy process. If you are currently working with a therapist, your practitioner is happy to collaborate with them to make sure your care is cohesive and supportive.
