ADHD Therapy Vancouver, WA

You’re Not Lazy. You’re Not Broken. Your Brain Just Works Differently.

Maybe you’ve spent your whole life hearing that you just need to “try harder,” “stay focused,” or “get organized.” You’ve probably tried every planner, app, and productivity hack out there. And yet here you are, still struggling to keep up with the demands of daily life, still beating yourself up when things fall through the cracks.

If you were recently diagnosed with ADHD, or suspect you might have it, you may be processing a wave of emotions: relief that there’s finally an explanation, grief for the years you spent blaming yourself, and uncertainty about what to do next.

How We Approach ADHD Therapy at Refuge

ADHD affects everyone differently. We start by getting to know your specific patterns: how your attention works, what triggers overwhelm, where shame has taken root, and what strengths your neurotype brings to the table. Awareness is the foundation of change.

ADHD is, at its core, a regulation challenge. Your nervous system may cycle between overdrive and shutdown, making it hard to find a steady middle ground. We use body-based and top-down approaches to help you build the internal stability that planners and apps can’t give you.

Years of feeling “different,” falling behind, or masking your struggles leave real marks. Shame, low self-worth, rejection sensitivity, and burnout are common companions of ADHD. We don’t skip over these. We help you process the emotional weight you’ve been carrying so you can finally put it down.

Once you understand your brain and have addressed the deeper layers, we help you create practical structures and habits that are designed for your unique wiring, not borrowed from someone else’s neurotypical playbook.

What We Won’t Do In ADHD Therapy

  • Treat you like you’re lazy or broken
  • Hand you a list of productivity hacks and call it therapy
  • Ignore the emotional impact ADHD has had on your life
  • Focus just on positive thinking

Instead, we’ll do the real work of understanding, healing, and building a life that fits your brain.

ADHD Therapy for Adults in Vancouver, WA

More Than Coping. More Than Coaching.

You can’t “hack” your way out of a dysregulated nervous system, and a few organizational tips aren’t enough to undo years of shame and self-doubt.

That’s why we go deeper. We use powerful, evidence-based therapeutic interventions that work from the bottom up (your body and nervous system) and the top down (your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions) to create change that lasts.

ADHD coaching can be a great complement to therapy, but therapy addresses the why behind your patterns, not just the how of managing them.

Our Therapeutic Approaches for ADHD

We integrate science-backed and experiential therapies to address the full picture of ADHD:

Many adults with ADHD carry accumulated emotional wounds from years of feeling different, failing to meet expectations, or being misunderstood. EMDR helps your brain reprocess these painful experiences so they stop fueling shame, anxiety, and avoidance in the present. It’s especially effective for the rejection sensitivity and emotional reactivity that often accompany ADHD.

Mindfulness can feel impossible with an ADHD brain, but the right approach makes all the difference. We use ADHD-friendly mindfulness techniques (not the “sit still and clear your mind” kind) to help you strengthen your ability to notice, pause, and choose your response rather than reacting on autopilot.

If you have ADHD, you probably know the inner critic well: the voice that says you’re lazy, unreliable, or “too much.” IFS helps you understand these internal parts with compassion rather than judgment. The procrastinator, the people-pleaser, the perfectionist: they’re all trying to protect you. IFS helps you work with them instead of fighting against them.

ADHD can take a toll on relationships, and relationship patterns from childhood can amplify the struggles of ADHD. Attachment-based therapy helps you understand how your early experiences shaped your relational patterns, so you can build more secure, connected relationships with yourself and the people who matter most.

ADHD is a nervous system condition, so it makes sense to include the body in the healing process. Somatic work helps you tune into the physical signals of overwhelm, restlessness, and shutdown. Through breathwork, movement, and body awareness, you can learn to regulate your system and find calm without numbing out or pushing through.

ADHD often comes with a deeply ingrained story: “I’m the one who can’t follow through,” “I always let people down,” or “Something is wrong with me.” Narrative therapy helps you separate yourself from these stories, examine where they came from, and rewrite them. You are not your ADHD, and your past struggles don’t define your future.

Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD Therapy

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to begin therapy at Refuge. Many of our clients come in because they suspect they have ADHD or relate strongly to ADHD traits, and therapy can be a valuable space to explore those experiences. If you’d like to pursue a formal assessment, we can refer you to trusted professionals who provide ADHD evaluations.

Essentially, yes. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is an outdated term. Today, the official diagnosis is ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), which includes three presentations: predominantly inattentive (what used to be called ADD), predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. So if you’ve always identified with “ADD,” you likely have the inattentive presentation of ADHD.

We do not prescribe medication at Refuge. Our focus is on the therapeutic side of ADHD support. However, if you’re interested in exploring medication, we can refer you to a trusted psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who can evaluate your needs. Many clients find that therapy and medication work well together, and we’re happy to collaborate with your prescriber.

We do not provide formal ADHD assessments or diagnostic testing. Our specialty is therapy. If you’d like a formal evaluation, we can connect you with qualified professionals in the Vancouver, WA area who specialize in ADHD assessment for adults. You’re welcome to begin therapy with us while pursuing evaluation elsewhere.

There’s no single “best” therapy for ADHD because everyone’s experience is different. At Refuge, we use a combination of evidence-based approaches including IFS (parts work), EMDR, somatic therapy, attachment-based therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques. We tailor your therapy plan to address your specific patterns, whether that’s emotional dysregulation, shame from years of struggling, relationship difficulties, or building practical systems for daily life.

ADHD coaching typically focuses on practical strategies: organization, time management, productivity, and accountability. Therapy goes deeper. We address the emotional and psychological layers underneath your ADHD patterns, things like shame, rejection sensitivity, relational wounds, and the nervous system dysregulation that no planner can solve. That said, coaching can be a wonderful complement to therapy, and we support clients who choose to use both.

ADHD in women often presents differently than the stereotypical image of a hyperactive child. Women are more likely to experience the inattentive presentation, which can look like difficulty concentrating, chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, and internal restlessness rather than outward hyperactivity. Many women develop strong masking skills, appearing to have everything together while struggling significantly on the inside. This is a major reason why women are frequently diagnosed later in life, often after being treated for anxiety or depression first.

ADHD doesn’t directly cause anxiety or depression, but it very commonly co-occurs with them. Years of struggling to meet expectations, feeling different from peers, and dealing with executive function challenges can contribute to chronic stress, low self-worth, and mood difficulties. At Refuge, we’re experienced in working with ADHD alongside co-occurring anxiety and depression, addressing the full picture rather than treating each concern in isolation.

We support adults ages 18 and up. We work with young adults, folks in mid life, and seniors. We also offer couples therapy for partners navigating the impact of ADHD on their relationship.

At Refuge, we are committed to real results, not quick fixes. You will likely begin to feel relief at the first session and in the early weeks, but the deeper change takes time.

Refuge is private pay only and does not accept insurance. See each practitioner or service for current fees. A full, transparent breakdown of pricing will be provided for all clients. We are able to supply you with a super bill for potential out-of-network reimbursement, and we accept HSA/FSA payments.
